David Gómez · Stone sculptor

Manifesto

I do not sculpt what I see, but what I feel.

01

Intuition

A dialogue between matter and intuition

In my Indian ink sketches I explore gesture, movement and the possibilities of form. That search stays open and carries on when I meet the stone.

While carving, intuition guides my decisions. The form develops in the dialogue between what I feel and what the material allows, taking shape through the process itself.

02

Tension

The strength of the edge

My language seeks synthesis: reducing form while keeping the intensity of a body, a gesture or a presence.

Edges and planes concentrate the tension of the work, while curves and voids articulate its movement. I am drawn to that balance between the fluidity of the figure and the resistance of the stone.

03

Material

Matter as medium and message

The stone takes part in every decision. Its hardness, its veins and its geological history shape the form and the course of the carving.

I work with those particularities so they remain present in the finished piece. I want each sculpture to keep the identity of its material and the trace of its transformation.
