Crema Marfil marble

About the stone

The sculpture is carved in Crema Marfil marble, quarried at Monte Coto (Pinoso, Alicante, Spain), a cream-toned stone with fine veining.

In Heracles, the reddish fissure running across the chest and back belongs to the block itself. It was kept during carving and guides the reading of the figure: the stone marks the point where the body shows its vulnerability.
